The earliest written record of the town is a charter dated 1170. However, the name has more ancient connections, it almost certainly comes from Mabonnus the ancient Celtic God of Water, lakes and rivers. Lochmaben’s location, being within easy reach of Carlisle, Dumfries and the motorway to the North makes it a convenient and yet peaceful place to be located. There are a great wealth of countryside pursuits and local leisure and sports amenities that all contribute in making this a wonderful place to live.
Local Services and Amenities
Lochmaben Primary School and Nursery are within a shortwalking distance of a few minutes. Lockerbie Academy is under ten minutes away by car or school bus. Futher education is also accessible, Paisley University, the University of Glasgow and Bell College all have campuses on the Crichton grounds in Dumfries under about 20 minutes away by car.
Leisure and Recreation
The area is well endowed with facilities and locations for a host of activities. Lochmaben has its own Championship 18 hole golf course , only about 3 minutes walk. The Golf course is in a very attractive location adjacent to Kirk Loch and overlooking the wide fertile Annandale Valley. Next door to the development lies Annandale Sailing Club where dinghy sailing and canoeing are both popular puruits. Fishing is available on Castle Loch, the local rivers ( Nith, Dryfe, Annan, Water of Milk) and the other three main lochs around Lochmaben. Other sports facilities within walking distance from the development include a bowling green, tennis courts. Nearby, at Lockerbie there is an ice rink for both curlers and skaters, home to the South of Scotland curling team. Each summer Lochmaben holds its Gala week and Riding of the Marches, which involves the local community in historic and recreational activities, celebrating the heritage of Lochmaben.
Health Care
The local surgery is in the High street a few minutes walk away. The health care services in Dumfries and Galloway are widely recognised as being among the best in the UK. With the relatively low population density, the area does not suffer the many problems in healthcare often associated with the major urban areas today. Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary is less than half an hour away with accident and emergency, maternity and general medical provision. Lochmaben has its own community hospital that provides outpatient and in patient care.
Retail Therapy
Main shopping centres are within easy access at both Carlisle and Dumfries. Local shops are located in Lochmaben High Street and include a post office, chemist.bakery, and a small supermarket. The cities of Glasgow, Newcastle and Edinburgh are all less than two hours by car and less by train from Lockerbie and Dumfries Stations. There are a wide range of fashion and sports retailers in the recently enlarged Gretna Gateway Centre around twenty minutes away.
